Tidbits From USC Sports On Tuesday

The USC womens basketball team begins play tonight in the WNIT at home against Appalachian State. The bigger story is will Dawn Staley stick around or take the Virginia job. By most accounts people think she is gone. It’s where she played college ball and I understand there is an out in her contract for her to leave for the Virginia job if she chooses to. I think she is probably gone. Hopefully not. She is in the process of building a respectable team here but they are still a few years away from competing for an SEC Championship. I actually became interested in the USC womens team after her hire. Having 2 of her top recruits leave the program the last 2 years set the team back but they play hard and are making improvements.

Position Changes During Spring Practice

Spring practice is a time when coaches love to experiment. They shuffle players around and try them at new positions. There are no games to play so it’s a good time to give young players a chance to see what they can do, and try players at different positions.

The Gamecocks are trying DeVonte Holloman at the spur and Damario Jeffery is moving to weak side linebacker. Hopefully some of the younger guys can step up at safety because DaVonte looked a little lost at times last year. His size I think will benefit him more at the spur.

With Garcia missing from practice for the week this should give Connor Shaw a chance to improve his stock. A lot of people are ready for him to step in now but his inexperience will keep him from taking the job from Garcia. But the competition will only help both of them.

Gamecock Baseball Drops One They Should Have One

I talked the other day about the bats being cold during the first half of the year and that really hurt USC last night. They are hitting a lot of fly balls. Sunday they had  3 or 4 hit to the warning track that were long outs. They lost to Furman last night and play Wofford tonight at home. A win tonight is needed after 2 straight losses. It’s not panic time by any stretch but they play a hot Georgia team this weekend and need to get the bats going.
