Today at spring training we watched the Braves defeat Houston 5-3. I was looking forward to watching Jason Heyward play but they gave him and Martin Prada the day off. Also wanted to watch Chipper Jones and he did play. He had a good day with 3 hits to raise his average to over .400 for the spring. He had 3 singles and two of them were seeing eye singles. I don’t know if they were hit hard enough to break a window pane but they count just the same.
Derek Lowe pitched 5 1/3 effective innings. He gave up 3 runs with most of the damage in the 4th inning. Kenshin Kawakami will get his first start Monday. The word is that he is on the trading block and the Braves want to showcase his talent to get the most for him. The new rookie first baseman Freddy Freeman was not very impressive at the plate. He hit three ground balls for outs to the infield.
An interesting note. The Houston starter was Nelson Figueroa. He is battling for the fifth starting position in the rotation. His inlaws and his wife were sitting behind us. He looked excellent in his start and had great control of his pitches. According to his family he has bounced around with a few teams the last three years and has been up and down between AAA and the major leagues.
I hope to catch the Braves again later in the week during my week here at spring training. Monday we plan on trying to catch the Phillies and the Red Sox. Have never been to the Phillies complex in St. Pete so looking forward to it. If you have never been to spring training but want to make the trip you have to put the Braves Disney World Complex at the top of your list of spring training sites to visit. It has great seating and is a beautiful spring training site.
