I expect a big crowd Saturday for the Gamecock spring game. They have a lot of festivities planned but most of the interest will be focused on the QBs with the suspension of Stephen Garcia. Specifically most people will be looking at Connor Shaw. I would not make to much out of it Saturday if he does not have a good day. Most of the offensive starters will not play very much so it’s kind of hard to determine a whole lot. Of course most of the starters on the defensive line will not play very much either. So I plan on just going out and enjoying the spring game.
Also I expect Garcia to return when fall practice starts and to be the starter on opening day. Right now he just needs to get his life together. The love his teammates are showing him is amazing. They are all over Twitter giving him some love. But I would still love to see Shaw have a good day. The practices I have been to he has just been average. As a matter of fact some people think Dylan Thompson has closed the gap on Connor. That can only help the team if it’s true.
Don’t expect to see Marcus Lattimore or Alshon Jeffery more than a series or two. Everyone knows what they can do and we don’t need some kind of freak injury to happen to either one of them. On the defense don’t expect to see to many starters in their for more than a few plays either. The spring game is the time to look at guys that were redshirts last year and backups to see what improvements they have made and try to determine if they will be able to help the team in the fall.
I am going to focus most of my attention on the defensive backs. I thought they were a huge let down last year. We need some to guys to really step up back there. Coach Ellis Johnson does not seem real happy with the play of some of the young DBs this spring. They have not stepped up the way he thought they would. At least not yet.
Of course the offensive line has been a problem for so long at USC you can’t help but worry a little about them. It really does not matter who the QB is if he has no time in the pocket. I will say last year I saw a big improvement in the OL but there were times when Garcia had to run for his life and Lattimore had to make his own holes. But overall I look for the OL to have greater depth and be much improved from last year.
There will be 2 practices next week after the spring game which is a bit different. The spring game starts at 1:00 on Saturday.
